Do I Come From an Imaginary Place That’s Based on the Earth and Do I Wear a Hat? (2010)

Exhibited as part of At Play 2012, South Hill Park Arts Centre, Ringmead, Bracknell
At Play 2012 is the finale of the At Play series. At Play is an invitation to the spectator to play – with an active sense of freedom similar to a child at play. This finale of the At Play series explores play that is free and spontaneous or bound by rules and conventions and the spirit of the Olympics. The exhibition examines play as a way of surviving boredom and of discovering the insecurity of the world, and the effect of random chance. It relates play to drawing – perhaps the most direct and free form of artistic expression. Artists at South Hill Park include Leszek Blyszczynski, Andi Chapple, James R. Ford, Flora Gare, Nick Kennedy, Philip Lee, Dan Lovelace, Sousan Luqman, Nyeema Morgan, Martina O’Shea, Katherina Radeva, Guy Tarrant, Cally Trench, Kim Walker and Mary Yacoob. At Play is curated and produced by Outi Remes and Cally Trench. At Play 2012 is in partnership with the New Ashgate Gallery, Farnham and OVADA, Oxford and includes exhibitions and projects in all partnering venues.

Three channel audio installation with field recordings and collected stones (7:23 minutes)
Clouds Prevented Further Observing 1770 takes as reference an experiment from the distant past that took place on the slopes of Schiehallion mountain in Perthshire. By calculating the mass of the mountainside, the hope was then to calculate the mass of the Earth based on the data received.
My assumption that the experiment was a failure, a moment in time that is now assigned to the records of the Royal Society of London, was what inspired me to visit the mountain and convey my own experience of Schiehallion on a day in July 2011.
